AFCOOP Updates - December 6th, 2024

Those downtown this morning heard the cannon firing and bells tolling at 9:04 am. On this day in 1917, The Great Harbour was faced with a sudden flash of absolute destruction. Today we reflect on the impact of the Halifax Explosion, which changed the lives of the people and landscape of this city forever. The Nova Scotia archives has digital scans of film footage taken by photographer and cinematographer, W.G. MacLaughlan (whose pictures are featured here).

Learn more about the history of the explosion by reading the Maritime Museum’s article and seeing their permanent exhibition at 1675 Lower Water St, which in their own words “describes not just the event of the Halifax Explosion, but the local and international response to the shocking disaster.”

TRIVIA QUESTION

What year did the Dawson City Film Find happen?

Answer to last week’s question: Evangeline (1914), produced by the Canadian Bioscope Company of Halifax (est. 1912). This is a lost film; no copies of it exist to public knowledge. Maybe there’s a reel deep under some other Dawson City permafrost…

Ad for the film in the Moving Picture World (Jan-Mar 1914), published in New York by the Chalmers Publishing Company

ABOUT AFCOOP: Established in 1974 the Atlantic Filmmakers Cooperative (AFCOOP) is a non-profit, community organization dedicated to supporting the production and presentation of independent film and moving-image-based work in a collaborative, learning environment.

AFCOOP acknowledges that we are located and operate in Kjipuktuk, in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People. This territory is covered by the “Treaties of Peace and Friendship” which Mi’kmaq, Wəlastəkwiyik (Maliseet), and Passamaquoddy Peoples first signed with the British Crown in 1726. The treaties did not deal with surrender of lands and resources but in fact recognized Mi’kmaw and Wəlastəkwiyik (Maliseet) title and established the rules for what was to be an ongoing relationship between nations. We are all treaty people.
